Painting an Exterior Wall

Painting an Exterior Wall

Painting exterior walls is an effective way to add colour and transform your outdoor space. Whether you’re looking to create a scheme that flows from the interior of your house or experiment with bolder shades, ourIntelligent Masonry Paintis available in almost all Little Greene colours.

It can be used to achieve a long-lasting, matt finish on brick, stone or rendered walls. Water-based, Masonry Paint dries quickly to a pleasingly smooth finish. Extremely durable, it’s guaranteed to last at least 15 years on exterior walls before repainting is required*. It also benefits from being highly dirt resistant and its anti-fungal and anti-ageing properties ensure it looks good for longer.

Follow our step by step guide to painting an exterior wall

Before beginning the project:

Make sure that the weather provides good conditions for painting. The ambient temperature should be above 5°c with no risk of rain during application or drying. Try to avoid painting in full sun or on surfaces that are already warm as this will affect the way the paint dries.

For new render, brick or cement block work:

  1. Ensure that the surface is clean, dry and grease free before brushing down the surface to remove any loose material.
  2. Stir the paint thoroughly before use. You can use either a high quality synthetic bristle brush that is suitably sized for the project or a short nap wool blend roller for the best finish on smooth surfaces. Select a roller with a longer nap length for textured surfaces to ensure even and thorough coverage. New brushes should be conditioned by washing them in clean water and thoroughly drying with a clean, lint free, cloth.
  3. Avoid immersing brush too far into the paint to prevent paint from entering the ferrule. Avoid drips and splashes by not overloading the brush.
  4. 应用涂料时,确保你油漆even strokes.
  5. Apply a primer coat of Intelligent Masonry Paint with a 5 to 25% (v/v) addition of clean water, depending upon the porosity of the substrate.
  6. Allow 4 hours for the primer coat to dry.
  7. After 4 hours, apply the first full coat of Masonry Paint.
  8. For the best finish, keep final brush strokes all in the same direction and never go over paint that has already begun to dry.
  9. Allow 4 hours before applying the second full coat of Intelligent Masonry Paint.

For painting over an existing paint finish:

  1. Ensure that the surface is clean, dry and grease free before brushing down the surface to remove any loose and flaking paintwork.
  2. Any loose mortar or render should be replaced and cracks should be filled with exterior grade filler.

If the surface has become powdery, this should be brushed down and treated with a masonry stabilising solution before painting.
  3. Areas with any fungal growth should be treated with a fungicidal wash or 25% solution of household bleach followed by thorough cleaning.
  4. Stir the paint thoroughly before use.
